We have an action packed weekend as we kick off the College Football Playoffs with some big Games and some must win games in the NFL on Sunday. Let’s dive right in.
Saturday’s LIVE Bets:
NCAAF: SMU Mustangs @ Penn State - 12:00pm ET
SMU +8.5
Analysis:
The game may see SMU make a late comeback to cover the spread, reminiscent of their performance against Clemson in the ACC Championship. Penn State has struggled against ranked teams, losing their last six games against the spread. Though they are favored to win, giving 8.5 points to an SMU team that has lost only twice by a total of six points seems excessive. Lets ride with the public on this one that shows 64% of the bets on SMU to cover here.
NCAAF: Clemson Tigers @ Texas Longhorns - 4:00pm ET
Texas -12
Analysis:
The Longhorns have performed well with extra preparation time, scoring 52, 34, and 49 points in their games this season. Their defense has allowed more than 17 points only three times, twice against Georgia. Historically, double-digit favorites in the College Football Playoff are 8-0, with only one winning by less than 17 points. Given these trends, it seems unlikely that this game will be close. The public is in favor of the Tigers to cover at 63% so we are against the Public on this one.
NCAAF: Tennessee Volunteers @ Ohio State Buckeyes - 8:00pm ET
Under 46
Analysis:
Ohio State has gone under the total in 7 of 9 Big Ten games, while Tennessee has done so in 5 of 8 SEC games. Both teams boast strong defenses, with Ohio State allowing just 10.9 points per game (the best in the nation) and Tennessee close behind at 13.9 points per game (4th). Given the strength of these defenses, a high-scoring game seems unlikely, but I expect the home team to win in a low-scoring affair. Once again the Public disagrees with us coming in at 67% in favor of more points than 46.
Sunday’s LIVE Bets:
NFL: LA Rams @ NY Jets - 1:00pm ET
LA Rams -3
Analysis:
Last week, we successfully bet on the Jets' team total, aided by a fourth-quarter rally. While the connection between Rodgers and Davante has been effective, much of that success was due to the Jaguars' poor pass defense. I anticipate the Jets' offense will struggle in this game, and more critically, their defense will likely be exploited by Sean McVay's Rams. The Jets' defense has been underperforming and is dealing with increasing injuries, which doesn't bode well against a motivated Rams team. The public is sitting at 70% in favor of the Rams to cover.
NFL: San Francisco @ Miami Dolphins - 4:25pm ET
San Francisco 49ers +1
Analysis:
The 49ers' defense has improved significantly with the return of safety Talanoa Hufanga and linebacker Dre Greenlaw, and Nick Bosa may also return soon. They are poised to contain a struggling Miami offense that is missing Jaylen Waddle and has seen declining performance from De'Von Achane. Despite recent setbacks, including a near win against the Rams, the 49ers are still in playoff contention and have a strong chance to finish the season with a winning record. We are siding with the Public which is coming in at 62% in favor of the 49ers to cover.
NFL: Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ Dallas Cowboys - 8:20pm ET
Tampa Bay -3.5
Analysis:
Dallas has won three of its last four games, despite a surprising loss to Cincinnati. However, the Cowboys' defense may have difficulty containing a Buccaneers offense that is averaging 31 points over its last four games, all wins. During this stretch, Tampa Bay’s defense has allowed just 15 points per game, bolstered by strong performances from offensive tackles Tristan Wirfs and Luke Goedeke, who effectively neutralized top pass rushers. Expect Baker Mayfield to receive solid protection and for the Buccaneers to cover the spread. The public bets are sitting at 73% on the Bucs.
